Young people seeking surgery

Plastic surgeons and the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) have raised concerns over the number of young people seeking plastic surgery, and that younger patients can be vulnerable and often have self-esteem issues. The concerns include a warning that procedures such as nose re-shaping and tummy tucks can’t always help people overcome problems with their body image.

While there may have been a recent increase in numbers of young people undergoing cosmetic surgery, this is not a new phenomenon. We at Bristol Plastic Surgery have always been aware of the impact of body image on self-esteem. This is why we approach our work in the Bristol Plastic Surgery Way. We do not rule out providing the benefits of aesthetic surgery to young patients but we are extremely conscious of our responsibility to care and put our patients first.

We recognise that cosmetic surgery can be life transforming but we may still ask our young patients to wait some time before undertaking a procedure. We will point out the implications of natural growth and physical maturation upon any such procedure. At the end of the day, aesthetic surgery may be in the young patient’s best interest.

If you are considering any cosmetic surgery procedures please approach us for a consultation for expert advice on the options available.
