Event: Free Mole Checks

by a Consultant Plastic Surgeon

As part of Skin Awareness Week commencing 9th May at 58 Queen Square we are providing free mole checks from our Consulant Plastic Surgeons.

Skin cancer is now nearly as prevalent as all other cancers put together, with more than 200,000 basal cell skin cancers treated with surgery a year. New research has found that, over the past decade, there has been an 80 per cent rise in cases of skin cancer which are treated with surgery alone. Malignant Melanoma skin cancer is the 5th most common cancer in the UK and the number of people being diagnosed with this type of cancer has more than quadrupled in the past 30 years, partly due to more people taking holidays abroad and spending more time in the sun.  With early detection and treatment, survival rates from malignant melanoma and other less serious forms of skin cancer is good.

Nigel Mercer featured in Aesthetics

Experiences in plastic and aesthetic surgery

Nigel Mercer featured in Aesthetics

Mr Nigel Mercer, part of our BPS team of plastic and reconstructive surgeons, has been featured in this month’s Aesthetics Journal, one of the top professional journals for medical aesthetic professionals.

Detailing his early desire to dedicate his life to medicine and the ‘light bulb’ moment when plastic surgery started to become his focus at the tender age of 11 years we see that surgery is a way of life for Mr Mercer, not just a profession. With a career that has taken Nigel to many medical centres of excellence Mr Mercer now divides his time between Bristol Plastic Surgery and his NHS practice as a leading consultant plastic surgeon.

Sun Beds in the News

Dangers of Overuse

Sun Beds in the News

Over use of sun beds is in the news as the incidence of skin cancer has soared in certain cities. It is the unregulated use, the use by the under eighteens and the use of coin operated sun beds that is causing concern. Here in Bristol we have quite a number of Tanning shops but we are also blessed with easy access to sunny holiday destinations.

At Bristol Plastic Surgery, we do recognise the health benefits of sunshine in boosting our Vit D levels and our sense of well being. We do however support the sensible regulation and testing of tanning equipment.

If you have any concerns about moles of any type and would like reassurance or where appropriate a biopsy, then contact BPS and arrange an appointment at our Rascal Clinic for rapid assessment by a Consultant Plastic Surgeon specialising in the treatment of Skin Cancer.

Young People Seeking Surgery

Body Image Pressure

Young People Seeking Surgery

Plastic surgeons and the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) have raised concerns over the number of young people seeking plastic surgery, and that younger patients can be vulnerable and often have self-esteem issues. The concerns include a warning that procedures such as nose re-shaping and tummy tucks can't always help people overcome problems with their body image.

While there may have been a recent increase in numbers of young people undergoing cosmetic surgery, this is not a new phenomenon. We at BPS have always been aware of the impact of body image on self esteem. This is why we approach our work in the BPS Way. We do not rule out providing the benefits of aesthetic surgery to young patients but we are extremely conscious of our responsibility to care and put our patients first.

Breast Lifts Outpacing Breast Implants

Aesthetic Breast Surgery

Breast Lifts Outpacing Breast Implants

Statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons posted on the 31st of March 2014 show the growth of Breast Lifts outpacing Breast Implants 2-to-1.

Breast implants are still overwhelming choice for women, but since 2000 breast lifts are up 70%. According to the new statistics, women between the ages of 30-54 made up nearly 70 percent of the breast lift procedures performed in 2013. According to Anne Taylor, MD, an ASPS-member plastic surgeon in Columbus, Ohio “More women are coming to us who’ve had children, whose breast volume has decreased and who are experiencing considerable sagging,” she said. “For many of them, we are able to get rid of excess skin and lift the breasts back up where they’re supposed to be.” Some patients opt to combine both implants and breast lift particularly if the they have lost volume.

If this is something you wish to discuss, feel confident that the advice from your very experienced BPS surgeon comes without any pressure to proceed. This is the BPS way.

Breast Surgery Tops Demand

Popular Cosmetic Surgery Procedures

Interesting figures have been released by BAAPS and highlighted in a Guardian cosmetic surgery article showing an increase in demand overall for plastic surgery in 2013 with breast augmentation the most popular and liposuction seeing the biggest increase.

The right cosmetic surgery procedure is a life changing experience for many, but as always we recommend care when selecting your surgeon and clinic.

The figures show breast augmentation is the most popular procedure at 11,123 operations in the UK during 2013, followed by eyelid surgery at 6921 and face lift with 6016.

Photodynamic Therapy at BPS

Facial Rejuvenation

Photodynamic Therapy at BPS

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is one of the most effective non surgical treatments for Solar Keratosis, Superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma and In Situ Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Bowen’s Disease. PDT is also sometimes used for facial rejuvenation and to treat moderate acne. It is particularly appropriate in the management larger areas of skin that have widespread, less distinct, thin skin cancers or pre-cancerous patches. These are most commonly on parts of the face, scalp and ears exposed to prolonged sun damage.

Bristol Plastic Surgery is currently the only provider of this treatment in Bristol. Please see our treatment pages for more information on Photodynamic Therapy.
